Plas Newydd - Winterise Your Caravan

Winter Ready at Plas Newydd – Preparing Your Caravan for the Colder Months

As Plas Newydd closes from 31 December until 1 March, now is the time to make sure your caravan is safely prepared for winter. From draining down your water system to simple ventilation checks, a careful close down will protect your holiday home and give you peace of mind until spring returns.

As we look back on another lovely season at Plas Newydd, it is time to make sure your caravan is safely prepared for its winter break. Our park closes from 31 December until 1 March and a careful close-down now will help protect your holiday home while it rests through the colder weeks ahead.

Owning a caravan in such a peaceful countryside setting brings so much enjoyment throughout the year. Taking a little extra time before you leave for winter means you can head home feeling confident that everything is secure, protected and ready to welcome you back in spring.

Here are our top tips for closing down your caravan safely:

💧 Drain Down the Water System

Turn off the main water supply and fully drain the system. Open all taps, including the shower, and flush the toilet to remove any remaining water. Do not forget to drain the water heater in line with your manufacturer’s guidance. Any water left in pipes during freezing temperatures can expand and cause damage, so this step is one of the most important.

🔥 Switch Off Gas and Electric

Turn off appliances and isolate your gas supply at the bottle. Switch off your electricity at the main switch and unplug non-essential items. This reduces risk and ensures everything is safely powered down while you are away.

🧼 Thorough Clean Before You Leave

Give your caravan a good clean from top to bottom. Remove all perishable food items from cupboards and the fridge, leaving the fridge door slightly open to prevent odours. Wipe down surfaces and vacuum carpets so you return to a fresh and welcoming space.

🪟 Allow for Ventilation

Good airflow is key during winter. Leave fixed vents open and internal doors slightly ajar to encourage air circulation. Moisture traps can also help manage condensation and protect furnishings from damp.

🛏 Care for Soft Furnishings

Stand seat cushions upright and move bedding away from exterior walls. This allows air to circulate and helps prevent cold spots from forming behind furniture.

🌿 Outside Checks Matter Too

Secure outdoor furniture, store loose items and ensure gutters are clear of debris. A quick walk around the exterior before you leave can make all the difference.

🔐 Final Safety Check

Before locking up, double-check that all windows and doors are secure. Remove valuables and make sure everything is safely stored away.

Although Caerwys View remains open over Christmas, owners who plan to leave their caravan unused for a period may also wish to carry out some of these winter checks for added reassurance.

There is something comforting about knowing your countryside retreat is tucked up safely while the park enjoys its winter pause. When we reopen on 1 March, the promise of fresh air, open views and peaceful mornings will be waiting once again.
